This FAQ is still under construction, and we expect to expand it quite
a bit as new questions arise in upcoming months. To suggest additions

Questions:
1 Where did amsfonts.sty go? amssymb.sty?
2 I tried \usepackage{theorem} with an AMS documentclass
and the `change' theoremstyle doesn't work
3 How can I create a LaTeX format file containing amsart.cls
and amssymb.sty?

Question 1: Where did amsfonts.sty go? amssymb.sty?
Answer: In versions 1.0, 1.1 of AMS-LaTeX, there were packages named
amsfonts and amssymb to provide easy access to the extra math fonts in
the AMSFonts collection. Those have now been moved to the AMSFonts
distribution, where they more properly belong. (They were originally
placed in the AMS-LaTeX distribution because at the time it wasn't
possible to assume the presence of NFSS in the underlying LaTeX system.)

Question 2: I tried \usepackage{theorem} with an AMS documentclass
and the `change' theoremstyle doesn't work:
Package amsthm Warning: Unknown theoremstyle `change'. Using `plain' ...
Answer: The AMS documentclasses use the amsthm package which is an
alternative to the theorem package, not a supplement.
(Question 2a: Why didn't the AMS classes just keep using Mittelbach's
theorem package as in version 1.1 of AMSLaTeX? Answer: The desired
theorem handling for AMS publications required some fairly extensive
adaptations of the theorem package. Instead of loading the theorem
package and then overriding 70% of it, in version 1.2 we decided to drop
the pretense and do the theorem-handling from scratch in an AMS-specific
package.)

Question 3: How can I create a LaTeX format file containing amsart.cls
and amssymb.sty?
I used to be able to do what I want with LaTeX209 by running iniTeX
on the following file
\input lplain.tex
\documentstyle[amssymb]{amsart}
\dump
\bye
Answer: In LaTeX2e the best way to do this is not well established yet.
There is a file mylatex.tex on CTAN that purportedly provides a
solution; we have not yet tried it [as of 27-Jan-1995].
