    The first case should be fixed; the second is a problem
    because we've defined ide device names to be either
    h<ctlr>.<drive> or h<number> where <number> is <ctlr>*2+<drive>,
    so more than two drives per controller won't work.
    It's also not obvious to me how one would address more
    than two drives when talking to the controller.
