Research Interests

My current research interests are mainly in scientific computing, numerical linear algebra, numerical solution of partial differential equations, large-scale optimization, computational photonics, and algorithms for circuit simulation.

Publications

Bibliography in bibtex format, as postscript file, or in html format.

Recent technical reports are available.

Tutorials

At the 1995 SIAM Annual Meeting, Peter Feldmann and I gave a short course on Numerical Simulation of Electronic Circuits: State-of-the-Art Techniques and Challenges. Lecture notes and a list of references for that course are available.

At the 1998 Design Automation Conference, Peter Feldmann, Tak Young, and I gave a tutorial on Interconnect Extraction and Analysis in High-Frequency, Sub-Micron, Digital VLSI Design.
Peter's first part, Tak's first part, Peter's second part, my part, and Tak's second part of this tutorial are available. There is also a list of references.

Software

QMRPACK, a software package with FORTRAN 77 implementations of various quasi-minimal residual (QMR) algorithms for the iterative solution of large linear systems and a FORTRAN 77 implementation of a look-ahead Lanczos-based algorithm for computing eigenvalues of non-Hermitian matrices, is available through netlib. There is also a paper that describes the use of QMRPACK.

BL-QMR, a software package with FORTRAN 77 and MATLAB implementations of a block QMR algorithm for the iterative solution of large linear systems with multiple right-hand sides, is available for non-commercial limited use.

Personal

I am married to Susanne Freund, and we have two children, Andreas and Alexander.

Andreas and Alexander are members of the Development Squad of the Davis Bike Club Junior Race Team.
Andreas' race results, race reports, and more can be found here.

Cycling is and has always been an important part of my life.

One of my personal bests is 200 miles in 9 hours 53 minutes (ridden at the 2006 Davis Double Century on May 20, 2006).

In 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2005, I did the Mount Washington bicycle hillclimb (7.6 miles, 4700 feet of vertical gain). My best time for this climb is 1:11:08, which in the 2002 race was good enough for 2nd place in the 45-49 age group; some pictures from my 2002 ride.

The Devil Mountain Double Century has 18,800 feet of elevation gain; see the elevation chart. This is probably the most climbing I have done in one day; results of the 2005 edition.

Another one of my favorite rides with lots of climbing is the Hillier Than Thou Century; results of the 2001 race; results of the 2002 race; results of the 2003 race.
